ABSTRACT

The use of flat glass on load-bearing structures, such as glass beams, columns, staircases or railings is quite common in contemporary architecture. There is also strong effort to use other glass products such as tubes, hollow blocks or solid bricks in addition to flat glass. The paper is focused on experimental verification of solid glass bricks usability for glass masonry. Key factor is the material properties of the components: glass bricks and mortar. Small size tests were used to determine flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of glass bricks and compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of mortar. Critical evaluation of the experimental results was used to select the appropriate mortar for subsequent testing of masonry pillars in scale 1:1.
