ABSTRACT

Children can process traumatic memories in many different ways. Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) are evidence-based therapies for traumatized children. Preverbal memories are stored in bodily sensations. Children can process traumatic memories in layers. Caregivers and the child’s network support the child during trauma processing and enable the child to practise new behaviour. In the integration phase, the remaining problems are addressed, such as improving attachment, daily life, emotion regulation and family connections. Discussing forgiveness can empower the child and parent and further improve their relationship. In this phase, grief over what the child lost and will never have can occur.
