ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the interaction of influence factors on further language learning and discusses suitable research methodologies to capture the dynamic picture of language learning and its complexity. To answer the questions which learner-internal and learner-external factors—that is, the family and the school environment and factors that are related to the social context—influence the language learning outcomes of primary school children in linguistic and cultural diverse contexts, and how children, parents, and teachers perceive, for example, the sociopolitical influence on language learning, a convergent parallel design within a mixed methods approach is proposed.

Moreover, Chapter 2 presents the epistemological assumptions, the research design, the participants and the instruments for data collection, the quality criteria, and the methods used for qualitative and quantitative data analysis of the present study.
