ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 provides an in-depth insight into learner-internal characteristics that affect further language learning; for this purpose, results from literature as well as results of the present study are used. Here, an emphasis is placed on motivation, attitudes, values, gender, length of LX learning, and migration. From the conducted study emerges, for example, that while a high motivation influences language learning outcomes in a positive way, a high instrumentality has a negative effect on learning outcomes. Although children, parents, and teachers mentioned the students’ intrinsic as well as extrinsic motivation, learner-internal characteristics received little attention within interviews and focus group discussions; other sociocultural and school-organizational aspects of the studied context are perceived to have a stronger impact on the phenomenon.
