ABSTRACT

Parents play an important role in supporting and promoting the child’s academic development. Therefore, this chapter examines the influence of the family environment on the learners’ language learning process and outcomes. The present study focused in particular on the influence of socioeconomic status and the parents’ ability as well as their potential to actively support the child in the learning process. Moreover, the parents’ proficiency in the target language as well as the families’ involvement in the learners’ homework was examined. The chapter shows discrepancies regarding the parents’ reported importance of parental support and their effective involvement. In addition, the collaboration between families and schools aimed at the promotion of further language learning is discussed.
