ABSTRACT

The introduction establishes the premise of the book regarding the urgent need for a shift toward comprehensive sustainability education that spans disciplinary boundaries at colleges and universities. Key concepts include the Earth Charter, ethic of care, holistic systems thinking, life’s flourishing, relational awareness, regeneration, resilience, and UN Sustainable Development Goals. The book’s purpose is to disseminate and invite discussion of sustainability-oriented initiatives developed by educators from several global regions. In theory-to-practice essays and case studies, authors conceptualize comprehensive sustainability education as it applies to particular circumstances in the context of escalating environmental degradation and associated challenges. Through examples of educational approaches designed to empower students and enhance their prospects for thriving, authors advocate holistic systems thinking that informs humanity’s decision-making with both short- and long-term impacts in view.
