ABSTRACT

The European project INBOTS aims at overcoming the lack of understanding and communication between different stakeholders within robotics and at bringing experts together “to debate and create responsible research and innovation for robotics”. Robot technology might also be the solution to and the source of our problems. Robots that support the well-being of humans might also create the problem that they try to solve. The chapter discusses the fore some possible long-term consequences of different types of technology. It aims to compile relevant findings in related disciplines that, although dissonant to human–robot interaction studies, may be appropriate when given a closer glance. In light of the potential long-term consequences of robot technology, the European Parliament has stated that robotic engineers should remain accountable for the social, environmental, and human health impacts that their creations may pose to present and future generations. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics may widen the already existing gap between humanities and sciences.
