ABSTRACT

Everyone knows what a robot is until asked to give a definition. However, if robot technology is to be regulated explicitly, then legislators might consider as necessary a definition of what is a robot. In this chapter, I first explain the etymology of the word robot. Ćapek wanted to criticize the mechanization of human workers as a result of the industrial revolution. Second, I provide a working definition for this book. In this chapter, I explain that robots are movable machines that perform tasks either automatically or with a degree of autonomy.
