ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 examines the growth of Korea’s ICT sector from 1980 to 2018 and suggests where Korea fits in the context of global trends in the digital economy. It documents the increasing role of Korea’s large industry groups in its export-led development. It also examines the relative weakness of the nation’s service sector and how it led to the drive to develop a creative economy, with its emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises and venture start-ups. The chapter concludes with an exploration of two promising growth industries for the future – robotics and online games.
