ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 looks at the relationship of the ICT sector to the challenge of sustainable development and how this relationship has been addressed in Korea. The ICT sector itself is both a contributor to environmental degradation and perhaps the best hope of dealing with it. Korea’s ICT-driven development and its dramatic shift toward a green growth policy make it a cogent case study that may clarify lessons to be learned by other countries. The chapter describes Korea’s island-based, urban and industry-based approaches to smart grid development, which may well benefit from the nation’s experience building digital networks.
