ABSTRACT
This develops an account of the form of understanding (why), namely empirical understanding, which was valued by the Victorian scientists discussed in the previous chapter. This form of understanding doesn’t require the use of accurate representations (or models). Rather, it involves representations that are cognitively appropriate to serving scientists’ empirical ends, in so far, for example, as they are highly memorable and easy to use.
