ABSTRACT

Both academia and industry have been involved in fiery debate regarding the paradox between complexity and innovation. The increasing ‘complexity’ in new system developments due to industrial decentralisation and globalisation shows that this debate has yet to be resolved. This chapter attempts to remedy the complexity of the human aspect of systems development, where subjective interactions and perceptions are taking place throughout new systems development processes. Considering such human aspects is helping productivity and furthering value creation in Norwegian engineering industries, where systems engineering is usually outlined. Furthermore, the chapter seeks to broaden and deepen human-centred design as an aspect of managing complexity in social-technical systems in pursuit of practical solutions. An extended application of human-centred design will also be demonstrated beyond the current fuzzy front-end focus.
