ABSTRACT

From a physical point of view, partition function (Z) characterizes the statistical properties of a system in thermodynamic equilibrium. Partition functions are functions of the thermodynamic state variables, such as the temperature and volume. Vibrational contribution to various thermodynamic functions is expressed in terms of a partition function and its first two derivatives. The partition function can also be seen to be the total number of particles expressed as the sum of the numbers of particles of each energy, with the population of the ground state being the unit of measure of population. Progress in nanostructured technologies results in the production of purposely made deformed structures. Planned nanostructures are thin films, nanocylinders, nanorods, etc. Today three-layer nanofilms are produced without any problems. The partition function Z encodes how the probabilities are partitioned among the different microstates, based on their individual energies.
