ABSTRACT

Various economically important plants are infected by single-stranded DNA viruses in subtropical and tropical region. Emergence of new species covered with wide range of cropping system among cucurbit is severely affected by producing mosaic and curling symptom. Under the family Cucurbitaceae melons, squash and gourds is significantly hampered by the begomovirus infection. Few reports available mention that Begomovirus also infect cucurbits in new world and old world. Cucurbits leaf crumple virus, Squash leaf curl virus, Melon chlorotic leaf curl virus, Squash yellow mild mottle virus, and Squash mild leaf curl virus are known to cause a huge economic deprivation in the family. Epidemiology of begomovirus infecting cucurbit plants is also distinct. In the western part of world, Squash mild leaf curl virus and Squash leaf curl virus are more prominent, whereas Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus is aggressive in the eastern part of world. Philippines, China, and Vietnam were severely affected by squash leaf curl china virus, 386whereas Squash leaf curl Yunnan virus has been present localized only in southern China. Loofa yellow mosaic virus is geographically restricted and is endemic species in southern Vietnam. Recombinant viruses are present in nature, which play an important role in virus evolution. Sometimes, recurrent or mixed infection provides a vital platform for viral DNA molecules for recombination. These molecular events are basis of enormous molecular diversity of plant viruses. Because of diverse host range and diversity in symptoms produced by same group of viruses onto different plants, classification of plant viruses is very thoughtful process. Here, we illustrate molecular diversity and epidemiology of begomoviruses and their satellites molecules in cucurbits crops which is seriously threatened.
