ABSTRACT

This chapter examines an instance of student engagement through staff–student partnership; the student partners in this project helped with design, delivery, and evaluation of a new non-traditional Science Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) program. The pilot program was completed with 11 student volunteers who helped road-test, refine, and redirect the offered activities. Two additional student researchers completed for-credit projects in which they evaluated the processes and products of the pilot. The student participants taught the academic implementers important lessons around student needs and interests; the chapter details these findings and also addresses the practicalities of engaging students in a pilot of this type. The project results are guiding a new, engaging, high-value approach to employability preparation for over 8,000 students a year in the host university.
