ABSTRACT

This chapter examines to what extent and for what reasons practices in the Chinese newspaper industry are either consistent to or conflicting with the national policies regarding media convergence. The newspaper industry is a sector where national policies have a heavy influence on professional activities because this industry not only generates economic benefits but also political and cultural effects. The convergence strategy accelerates the progress of transformation because it covers all aspects of newspaper business – content production, distribution outlets, platform construction, commercial operation and the administration of ideological security. Media policies in China are characterised by the ‘experimental nature’. Their formulation and implementation are an evolving process comprising gradual adaption and continual learning. The ‘Internet Thinking’ is stressed by the national leader in the core content concerning the issue of media convergence. The government administration of Chinese media is separated by geographical regions and industry categories.
