ABSTRACT

This is the second of the care chapters. It includes what is known about treatment for ARFID; which approaches might be appropriate for different aspects of the condition; how to decide the best way to proceed for any one individual; and what families might be offered if they attend a clinic. The chapter summarises the existing evidence base and sets out best practice where evidence-based interventions do not yet exist. Discussion is structured around the model for evidence-based practice that includes research evidence, clinical expertise and patient views and values, applied to what is known about ARFID. The importance of a thorough assessment is stressed, to allow appropriately targeted treatment. The value of a multi-disciplinary team in the treatment of ARFID is also discussed. Three case examples are given to illustrate different aspects of the text.
