ABSTRACT

Inasmuch as the size distribution of income analysed in the present study is based mainly on data collected by the 1971 Population and Housing Census, we need to know the scope and method of the census, and how the census data compare with national account aggregates. In addition, measurements of inequality are also discussed. Data availability on the national income of Hong Kong by various categories is confined to two years; for other years only rough estimates of gross domestic product have been attempted. The 1971 Population and Housing Census was the second post-war full census for Hong Kong. With this adjustment, the census income amounts to 80 per cent of the figure derived from national accounts. Unfortunately it is difficult to conjecture on the extent of measurement errors, particularly in the absence of any previous comparable survey efforts at collecting income data.
