ABSTRACT

The following introduction to the volume begins with a brief outline of the theoretical context of the study. It has been argued that in order to understand the contribution of great men in history, one has to take into consideration the conditioning and context in which they acted and were acted upon. In this context, it has been argued that although one of the prominent political leaders of modern Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah, had rendered lifelong services to his people, that does not mean that his actions or ideas are immune from critical study. The study is essentially aimed at understanding the making of contemporary Kashmir as it is and the role of Sheikh Abdullah in its making.
