ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the emergence of a new educated middle class with political ambitions in Kashmir and looks into the causes which led to the emergence of Abdullah as the most dominant political figure. Besides underlining the techniques of political mobilization employed by Abdullah, it also highlights the process of the spread of political consciousness in the state and how the society and the feudal government responded to the infant currents of nationalism in the state?
