ABSTRACT

Statistics show that unemployment in Tanzania in 1965 was rather low. The labour force survey of that year showed that the unemployment rates were only 7.0 and 3.9 per cent in the urban and rural sectors, respectively. At first sight the Tanzanian economy has been doing fairly well. From 1966 to 1979 it grew by between 4 and 5 per cent yearly, rates that were much better than those of most other African countries. This first impression, however, changes to something less favourable if the country’s fast population growth of about 3.28 per cent a year is considered. The change in the educational profile of Tanzania can be described briefly. In the beginning the profile was like a pole stuck to a pedestal. The pole has remained tall and slender, while the pedestal has been broadening rapidly since the country’s Independence in 1961.
