ABSTRACT

Chapter Three focuses on the modern period to examine the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a window onto contemporary Jewish-Muslim relations. While I certainly realize that not all Muslims are Palestinians and not all Palestinians are Muslims, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict nonetheless provides a convenient lens to shine light on how each continues to think about itself by thinking about the other. The anxiety produced by the lack of a geographic border mimics the lack of social and religious borders from the previous two chapters. Though I will focus on the political conflict – and the chapter will, at times, read as one of political science – I need to do this in order to get at the larger point I wish to make, which returns us to the larger theme of the volume.
