ABSTRACT
The theory of retrieval competition (Brewin, 2006) suggests that mental representations compete for retrieval in working memory. In the context of psychopathology, negative representations are believed to have a ‘retrieval advantage’ over functional representations. Research indicates that chairwork is a particularly memorable form of therapeutic intervention. This suggests that chair-based techniques generate adaptive mental representations which are particularly salient and distinctive.
