ABSTRACT

CBT often incorporates interventions for regulating affect. This chapter outlines some of the ways in which chairwork is used to help clients clarify, express, process, soothe, and decentre from distressing emotions. Thought is also given to ways chairwork is used to overcome emotional inhibition and avoidance in CBT. Techniques described in this chapter include multiple (emotional) selves, empty-chair ventilation, two-chair self-soothing, emotion coaching, physicalising emotions, and self-distancing.
