ABSTRACT

Chapter 6, devoted to Cholas, 20th century lower-class women in the US barrios, follows the same structure of the previous chapters. It provides a description of Chicano/Latino barrios and their socioeconomic and cultural context, in order to understand the social reality where these women are born and raised. It places these women in the context of the decade of the Nineties in the United States, and looks at the way the fashion tendencies changed with the beginning of a global culture and the arrival of new technologies. Finally, the chapter provides a description of the way Cholas dress and look and considers the degree of intentionality in their subversive look and attitude.
