ABSTRACT

The concept of intercultural education is relatively recent in Portugal. Many political decision makers, experts, researchers, academics and other professionals within the education sector, are still not completely aware of the importance of this educational strategy.

In this vein, this study pursues a double objective: to put into context the emergence of intercultural education and ascertain its state of development in this country. This is achieved through a first part that examines the social and political context which lends support to this educational strategy and a second part in which the political measures taken are analysed together with the action taken to put them into effect.
