ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the context, indicates some of the challenges that an influx of minority ethnic groups, and describes some constructive responses. Historically, migration and immigration are longstanding international phenomena. In the 1990s, and for the foreseeable future, they represent highly complex, sensitive and emotive issues. In a world of increasing economic, social and political interdependence, the formal educational system of a country has an increasingly important role to play. As a consequence of growing immigration, European countries are increasingly pluralist. In any society, characterised by cultural, ethnic and religious diversities, the deeply held moral and political value systems of individuals and groups are continuing sources of tensions and disagreements. In a multicultural society such as the UK., characterised by marked cultural, ethnic and religious diversities, is there a consensus of values that can be used to strengthen social cohesion.
