ABSTRACT

Etienne, alias Stephen Lamaire, was a slave to a person by the name of –– Lamaire, in the island of Guadaloupe, who, in consideration of his faithful services, gave him his freedom; after which, as appeared by the testimony of several witnesses who were examined on his trial, he followed the business of a barber and kept a shop of his own in that island. After some time, he was appointed an officer in the French army, against Victor Hughes, and had the command of a fort, and he remained in the army until the close of the war.
