ABSTRACT

Prince Hopkins, a colored man, was sawing wood in the street, in Philadelphia, in the first month, 1802, when he was arrested by a constable, at the instance of a man by the name of ––– Kingsmore, son of John Kingsmore, of the city of Baltimore, as the slave of the latter, and taken before Alderman Michael Hillegas, who sent for me. Prince was a shrewd, sensible man, and put them upon the proof that he was a slave, and denied that he knew any thing about the parties claiming him. But young Kingsmore made oath that he knew him perfectly well, and that he was the slave of his father, and had eloped from him.
