ABSTRACT

Fanny, a likely mulatto woman, was a slave to John Sears, of Hartford county, Maryland. When she was about twenty-four years old, she escaped from his service, went to Philadelphia, and hired as a domestic in the family of Isaac W. Morris. After her arrival in that city, she called her name Mary Holliday. Being a prudent, industrious woman, and worthy of confidence, the family became much attached to her. She had remained but a few months in that situation, before her mistress (her master being dead) became informed of her location, and went to Philadelphia, in company with a man by the name of Dutton. She had her arrested on the 7th of 6th mo. 1805, and taken before Matthew Lawler, who was then Mayor. Isaac W. Morris informed me of the circumstance, and solicited my assistance, and I accompanied him to the office. It was not a difficult matter to discover that Mary could not conceal her alarm and distress, though she made an effort to do so.
