ABSTRACT

A colored woman, by the name of Mary, who lived in my family as a domestic, and afterward hired about a year with Matthew Lawler, mayor of the city, became the mother of an illegitimate child by a white man. She applied to one of the city aldermen, and there made oath as to the paternity of her infant. I purposely omit names, being unwilling to wound the feelings of any family. The sins of the father ought not to be visited upon the children.
