ABSTRACT

The printing of the title shows a slight alteration from the one registered: the Stationers’ Register shows ‘new wonder or a woman neuer vext’, implying a double title of the formula of Shirley S. Allen’s Changes, or Love in a Maze. A New Wonder, A Woman Never Vext was entered on the Stationers’ Register on 24th November 1631. It was printed by George Purslowe in 1632; the quarto title-page replaces the ‘or’ of the Register’s entry with a comma. In 19 years as a master printer, Purslowe printed ten dramatic works, including two pageants and a masque; apart from A New Wonder, he also printed Changes in 1632, for W. Cooke. William Gay was freed on January 12th 1631 and agreed to work for Purslowe one further year. He was probably a pressman, since he contracted to work ‘XXX’ per day for eight shillings per week.
