ABSTRACT

A mixed economy of continuing professional development activity will enable to offer a good range of opportunities for staff to develop their knowledge and skills. There are many issues facing parents, teachers and other professionals with regards to ADHD. Not least of these is a lack of consistent recognition that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a real condition and not, as presented by the media, an excuse for badly behaved children. ADHD is a developmental disorder caused by neurological and genetic factors, and influenced by environmental factors. ADHD can be successfully managed in schools when appropriate systems and strategies are understood and employed by all staff. Appropriate medication combined with counselling and support can be extremely effective in countering the negative effects of ADHD. Different kinds of medication work on the chemical messengers in the brain to regulate the child’s behaviour.
