ABSTRACT

The use of medication for helping children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has suffered from significantly ‘bad press’. In appropriate prescription and adverse side effects always make for shocking ‘scare stories’. Medication will always remain a controversial issue and it is never an easy decision for any family to take. Each individual child with ADHD will respond differently to medication; however certain patterns have developed between the two main groups in use today in the UK, that is, the stimulants and the non-stimulant Atomoxetine. Many teachers are very sceptical about the use of medication; an explanation of ADHD in medical terms can help them accept this as an option. ADHD can be described as a neurobiochemical condition caused by dysfunction of specific neurotransmitters within the brain. Both teachers and parents should discover and carefully consider the facts about different types of medication, rather than be misled by what they may read in the popular press.
