ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author utilizes the updated four-component working alliance framework to shed light on the Single-Session Therapy (SST) process. He argues that when the client and therapist have a robust and collaborative bond, share similar views of facets of this process, negotiate realistic client goals and work together to find a solution that facilitates goal attainment, there will tend to be a good outcome from the meeting. The author discusses two such ways: the role of the ‘core conditions’ in SST and the importance of developing a collaborative relationship. While the SST therapist needs to create space for the client to express themself, this space needs to be limited to one issue which will make a difference to the client’s life. Being honest and giving authentic responses to a client indicate the therapist’s wish to have a real relationship with the client in SST.
