ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how SST therapists use client variables in the session in the service of the client’s change process. It gives examples showing the questions that a therapist can ask when using a client’s strengths, their previous attempts to solve the problem and their role models in dealing with their problem and/or in the service of their goal. Single-session work is in large part based on the principle of client empowerment. The view is that the client has lost their way in life or has got stuck and has also lost touch with the strong and resilient parts of themself. The therapist’s primary task is to help the client to reconnect with those constructive parts of self and to see that they can be applied to help achieve their goal or to get unstuck.
