ABSTRACT

Systemically unstable patients are managed in hospital intensive care units. Specialist input is required of casualty officers to rule out ocular complications related to their admission or as a consequence. This chapter details common ocular conditions such as corneal exposure, trauma or intraocular infection or inflammation, of which the reader should be aware when called to examine a patient in ITU. Pitfalls are identified and methods of bedside examination of an unresponsive patient are detailed.
