ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a number of specific activities, with leisure spending and transport and with educational classes and the membership of clubs and societies. Much of the visiting by married couples was family visiting either during the day if the family lived close by or at the weekend if they lived further afield. The married and the courting knew when and how often they visited; many of the single unattached people had to think hard to decide whether they ever visited anyone or not, and there was very little indication of a home based social life for this section of the population. Drink was the item of leisure expenditure mentioned by far the most frequently and visiting public houses was the most frequently mentioned leisure activity. The weekly programme of one of the clubs in Minton includes a night when a visiting group plays for dancing, a night devoted to Bingo and a weekend floorshow.
