ABSTRACT

Moortown is a mining town with a population of under twelve thousand. The basic idea of the project in Moortown was that it might be possible for a part-time youth worker to contact and to make his skills available to groups of young people in the town, who appeared not to be served by the existing provision. In Moortown, however, there seemed little alternative provision of any kind. Work started in Moortown on Monday, 15 May 1967, when Gordon Wainman, the appointed part-time worker, went into the town to begin the exploratory phase of the project. The first four visits produced some varied and perhaps inaccurate impressions. On fine evenings there were several groups of young people in the square. The young people in Moortown were the young people of Moortown and what they did mattered. If a broken bus shelter could be laid at the door of marauding young savages from Sheffield, then this was all right.
