ABSTRACT

Confidence is one of the most important mental skills that one can have. It can help you in situations where you might have otherwise failed. Past experience is one of the best ways to boost confidence. Comparing oneself to others is also an effective way to build confidence if there is limited experience to look back on at a given level of competition. Preparation and good coaching is also a major contributor to self-esteem in athletics. Narcissism is a pathological form of confidence that should be avoided. One should try to focus on doing their job to the best of their ability rather than winning. Winning comes as a by-product of doing one’s job well. Cinderella man James Braddock was able to effectively use confidence to his advantage in his boxing career.
