ABSTRACT

7 directious] Though the word is not listed in the OED, I, along with Grosart, retain the original as being characteristic of Quarles’ diction, and assume the reading of Q2–5 to be a compositor’s “correction.” In “The Vocabulary of Francis Quarles” Raymond E. Tyner remarks that the OED cites Quarles as the first to use approximately two hundred words. He then lists thirty-three overlooked by the OED, including exuberous and predictions. For another example of Quarles’ creation of an adjective by the addition of -ous to a noun see IIII.10.7 elegious, and explanatory note.
