ABSTRACT

Bevan describes a research/practice collaboration between after school STEM educational leaders and researchers. The goal of the project was to identify key design principles underpinning expert afterschool STEM programming. The chapter highlights the use of a set of research+practice tools and routines designed to support practitioners’ collaborative, iterative review of video data from our respective programs. The two-year project produced two frameworks, Afterschool STEM Design Principles and Learning Dimensions, reflecting practitioner values, language, and concerns. These frameworks served as the basis for later research and professional development activities for the informal science education field.
