ABSTRACT

Anne Birgitte Rønning discusses the theme of women’s artistry and creativity in the decadent context, this time the Norwegian writer Dagny Juel Przybyzsewska. Like many other decadent women writers, Juel Przybyszewska’s dramatic life, her marriage to the Polish decadent Stanis?aw Przybyszewski and her premature death used to attract more interest than her work. Rønning discusses four prose poems from 1900, dealing mainly with decadent imagery vis-à-vis the expression of female subjectivity in love and art, including a meta-level, that is, asking what the concept of decadence brings us to see and understand in Juel Przybyzsewska’s work.
