ABSTRACT

Government offices are supplied with mission-trained Native clerks, interpreters and assistants; the members of the staffs of Government Normal and Jeanes schools are graduates of mission schools. The director of the Government Jeanes School at Mazabuka, established to give practical training to the teachers of the Territory, is a man with many years of missionary experience. The programmes of missions and Government for the advancement of the people through education have every reason mutually to support each other, although the fundamental drive of each, in the nature of the case, differs. The chief and the only serious criticism of government by Northern Rhodesia missionaries were in regard to education. The missionary may with profit consider the strength of his position, the complete freedom of activity, the influence through education that has been put into his hands by Government, and the degree of unity in aim between himself and the Administration.
