ABSTRACT

A distinctive feature of Swedish higher education is the relatively high proportion of freestanding courses that can be freely combined by students and result in a customized Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree, if certain requirements are met. There is strong support for student engagement at the national level. Student engagement is embedded in the Swedish academic culture by long tradition, and the law stipulates that students are to co-govern at all levels of higher education institutions, and that they have the right to give their feedback on every course. Based on their macro level mandate and endorsement, the Active Student Participation team was resourced to work inventively on the meso level for two years. The greatest need for improvement of student participation is probably to be found at the micro level. According to research, the benefits of partnership in teaching and learning include increased student engagement, as well as enhanced motivation and learning.
