ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates multiple cases of technology-enabled frugal innovation across the globe. Landmapp offers land mapping services with a simplified process using mobile devices and GPS. The goal of Landmapp is to provide land ownership documents to farmers in rural areas in developing countries at affordable prices. 3D printing is a technology that helps to reduce the manufacturing costs and time to market for frugal innovations. Mobile services, including the GPS technologies, offer the needed accessibility and availability of the frugal solutions, especially in remote locations. Cloud technologies reduce the required capital investment for hardware and data management to a large extent. Data storage in cloud makes the solution light-weight, easily deployable, and provides opportunity for rapid expansion. Medical and healthcare services are costly affairs and out of reach for most people that live in developing countries. Cloud technologies are rather used for data management and offer real-time data availability in remote locations for the effective operation of frugal innovations.
