ABSTRACT

Women leaders in India’s newsrooms are rare, even though the number of women journalists continue to grow rapidly in the world’s most populous democracy. This chapter examines the challenges faced by women journalists and editors across India’s newsrooms, and their perceptions of change and hope. In this chapter, 12 editors, producers, newspaper editors, online heads, and television news producers share stories of gender stereotypes, the hurdles women leaders overcome at work, and the fight for equal rights that continues to dictate newsroom decisions, and speak of policy decisions needed to address these concerns.
