ABSTRACT

To assess tobacco use, prevention, and control efforts adequately, there is a need to supplement the available data with data collected to answer specific evaluation questions. The major objective of this chapter is to describe the methods for evaluating a tobacco cessation service. The Public Health Service (PHS) guidelines for treating tobacco use and dependence identify five key processes and six structures based on evidence indicating the need for raising the rate of smoking cessation in a tobacco cessation center. It is important that smoking cessation outcomes should be recorded at all follow-up sessions and smoking abstinence will be assessed using a 7- and 30-day window. This chapter infers that the evaluation indicators help with the project planning and implementation, documentation of information, and measurement of the effectiveness of an intervention, including its policy and media efforts.
