ABSTRACT

You see your next patient, a 32-year-old bear, in a busy emergency department. He is rushed through to the resus department with his oldest faithful friend. He was searching in the forest for his favourite food – honey – when he came across a hive. Unable to control his insatiable appetite, he put his hand into a hive and was stung several times. He then became very short of breath and wheezy with lip swelling. By the time the paramedics arrived, his airway was becoming compromised and he was unable to complete sentences. His friend was a first aider and had placed him in the recovery position. His friend was very agitated, jumping up and down nearby. On examination in the department, his saturations are 92%, his heart rate is 125 and his BP is 98/40. He has marked facial oedema and lip swelling and you note marked stridor.
