ABSTRACT

A 12-year-old girl is brought to the emergency department by the local priest with repeated vomiting and abdominal pain occurring during an attempted exorcism. On questioning she has been very thirsty and drinking lots over the past week. They report her behaviour to have been bizarre with some inappropriate swearing and some self-harm to her abdomen. She has also had polyuria and reportedly urinated on the floor. On examination she appears confused and lethargic and has dry mucous membranes. After a full examination you take some blood tests ( Fig. 7.1 ).
